Founders of Om Vidyalankar Shikshan Sanstha

Om Vidyalankar Shikshan Sanstha’s Asmita College of Arts and Commerce, Junior College for Women established in 1989 mainly to focus on knowledge and women’s education. Knowing the fact that, women’s education in India has been a need of the hour and education is a foundation stone for the empowerment of women, this institution was further extended to the Degree College in 1992. The institution is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and offers self-financed, undergraduate courses like degree in B.Sc. (I. T.) and B. Sc. (Computer Science), (Co-Education).

Om Vidyalankar Shikshan Sanstha’s Utkrsha Bal Mandir School was founded by Late Madhukar Bhagwan Narvekar Sir in and honourable Mrs. Anupama Narvekar in 1971. Being highly proficient and a visionary, he started this institution with merely five students in 1971 and today college is imparting education to more than 3000 students.

Though this journey was laborious and difficult, this could have achieved only because of the support of his beloved wife Mrs. Anupama Narvekar who stood as strong pillar, thus confirming, ‘Behind every successful Man there is always a Women’.

Narvekar couple, the founders of the Om Vidyalankar Shikshan Sanstha believed that education is a milestone of women empowerment because it enables them to respond to the challenges, to confront their traditional role and change life. Taking this movement ahead, Mrs. Anupama Narvekar Madam, who as a Secretary of OVSS along with their lineage is contributing towards further development of the institution to achieve its cherished dreams.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Om Vidyalankar Shikshan Sanstha’s Asmita College of Arts and Commerce for Women was established in 1989 with Junior College and Degree College was started from 1992. The college is affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

“Empowerment of Women through Education” has been the broad objective with which the College was established.  This college has been catering the educational needs of girl students belonging to middle and lower middle classes not only from Vikhroli but also from Ghatkopar right up to Mulund and Thane. From a humble beginning the college has growth over the year. At present the College provides education to nearly 2500 students.

The Asmita College is situated in the Kannamwar Nagar-2, Vikhroli (East) and is at a walking distance of 10 minutes from the Vikhroli Railway Station. The College is accessible through regular bus service as well as through ‘Share Rickshaw’ from the Railway Station. The College has a spacious campus with Gymkhana as well as canteen facilities and a well-equipped library.  Adjoining the College is a spacious Municipality ground.  Which is used for various games and sports.

Besides educational activities, the College also provides for an all-round development of the students. The NSS unit of the college enables the students to develop social awareness and the need of social service. The College has adopted Bhinnar Village near Bhiwandi, where annual campus are held.

The College also has the NCC unit, which was established in July 2002.  The NCC cadets from this College have been attending various competitions.

The students are provided with both indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. The indoor games include Carrom, Chess and Table Tennis.  Outdoor games included Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Volley-Ball and Cricket. Women’s Cricket has been a popular sport in this College.  Since 2004-2005 the College has started hosting the Inter-Collegiate Women’s Cricket tournament.

The College provides ample opportunities to the students to develop their cultural interests and skills. Collectively known as Pratibimbha, the cultural activities are conducted in the month of December.

Besides these activities the College also offers career guidance to the students by organizing lectures and workshops in various crafts so as to enable the students to choose their career.  The College has a well-equipped Computer Lab through which the students are provided with computer training.

Self-financed courses, such as B. Sc. I. T and Computer Science was started in the year 2009-2010.

The College is blessed with a patronizing management, dedicated teachers and efficient non-teaching staff.
